Hobbit-ish Potpurri: Odds & Sods

Hey Humble Readers...

Thunderstorms appear to be weather du jour.  We've had some major downpours over the last few days, and honestly I'm loving it.  After the heat wave we had before we went on vacation and the desert heat in K-town last week, I was so ready for some cooler temps.  Ginny has been enthralled by the heavy cloud bursts and the thunder.

*****
AF has shown up, and I confess she's kicking my ass.  All those women in my life who told me that cramps get better or at least easier to deal with after you have kids are lying sacks of dragon poop.  I'm in a lot of pain here, and tyl.enol isn't touching it.  Ugh.

*****
In other cycle-related news... last week I experienced the epitome of irony.  I had what I can only describe as the most incredible, copious EWCM.  Seriously, I have never EVER experienced anything like it.  I was always one of those women who had to do internal checks for CM in order to catch the scant amount of the good stuff I would get.  This was immense, and it lasted for two days.  Now, when our family building days are over I get enough to sink a battleship.

*****
While we were in K-town, I saw a couple of movies, and they were polar opposites.  First, I went to see "Magic Mike" with my Mom and my sister.  While it was entertaining, and certainly drool-worthy, it had the crappiest script I've ever seen in a movie.  Honestly, I think they were ad libbing most of it.  Channing Tatum is lovely to look at, but this movie certaily didn't do anything to prove his acting chops.  I suspect that it will be up for a dozen Razzie awards next winter.

The second movie I went to see was an incredible contrast. My Beloved and I had a date night while in K-town, our first since Pippin was born.  "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" was incredibly sweet, moving, and so beautifully acted by some of the best actors of the age.   Anytime you can combine Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, and Penelope Wilton (yes... Cousin Matthew's mother from Downton Abbey!) you get sheer genius.  If you haven't seen this movie, please do yourself a favour and go see it.

*****
We're planning on taking the wee-lings to a street performers festival this weekend.  Seeing as it's basically free, I'm hoping that it will be entertaining for all of us.  I want to expose Ginny to as many different fun, cultural, and educational experiences as I can.  With our budgetary constraints, anytime I can find something free, I have to give it a shot.

*****
If you are a praying type person, please send out some prayers for my Beloved.  He's getting frustrated with his job search.  He's in a tough spot right now.  While he's been applying for a ton of different positions, so far there have only been a couple of nibbles that would be a step backward for him or would require us to move which isn't an option at this point.

He's sort of in a limbo area in terms of his qualifications.  He's worked for years as an accountant and a controller.  He's got far more experience than your run of the mill bookkeeper, and yet he doesn't have the accounting designations (like a CGA) to back it up.  A lot of job listings have said that relevant experience will be considered in lieu of having a designation, but he's just not getting the calls.  The obvious solution is to get him designated (there's a few courses he needs to take), but that costs money that we don't have.  He's feeling very discouraged.

Hobbit-ish Potpurri: A Summer Night's Ramblings

Howdy Humble Readers,

I apologize for my prolonged absence from the blogosphere.  Honestly, the crap going on in my extended family is taking its toll on my creativity and desire to write.  I have made the decision that for the time being I am not going to blog details what's going on with my parents.  It's enough to say that my sister and I have pondered several times in the past week about just when we became fodder for the Je.rry Sp.ring.er show.  It's sad, gut-wrenching, and I honestly have never been so angry in my whole life.

*****
I have a project in the works that I hope turns out well for my Beloved's Father's Day gift.  It's not anything spectacular, but it's fun.  Of course, I got the idea off Pinterest.  We'll see if it turns into a success or a big ol' Pin-fail.  On a related note, I can attest to the calming effect of perusing pins.  I think I have added more pins to my boards in the last week than I have since I started.

*****
I ended up going to see Snow White & The Huntsman with a couple of my girlfriends (thank heaven for a night out of the asylum!).  It was just as I was expecting.  So long as Kristin Stewart wasn't talking or the primary focus on the screen, it was an okay movie.  Her performance was as dull as can be expected, and the only remarkable thing about it was that it was obvious that she was trying to copy Emma Watson's accent, when she remembered to use a British accent.  I can see it being nominated for art direction, costumes, or special effects in the next award season.  The main thing that stood out to me and my friends was that it ripped off a lot of other fantasy movies.  There were some serious LOTR and Harry Potter moments, along with other movies.  BTW, the guy who plays the Huntsman (I can't recall his name) is super yummy!

*****
Ginny has developed a new, very annoying habit that we are at a loss as to how to fix.  She is fixated on her diaper, particularly with taking it off when she's in her crib.  I'm honestly not sure if it's an attention getting thing, if it's because she's no longer in onesie shirts so she has more access to her diaper, if it's because they have Elmo on them (her new obsession), or if it's because she's ready for potty training.  It's most likely all of the above.  It means we're doing a lot of laundry, and it's just icky.

I'm not ready to start potty training yet, because we are going to be travelling next month, and that would just be too stressful.  I'm also wondering if it's in response to Pip's arrival, and she'll just grow out of it.  I've been given a couple of suggestions, but I'm wondering if any of my bloggy friends have any other insights.

*****
I have purchased a tomato plant.  It's out on our balcony and I'm hoping that I might improve my black-thumb status by getting at least one good tomato off the silly thing.  If that works, maybe next year I'll branch out and try peppers too.

*****
I'm definitely dealing with some serious hormonal changes this week.  My post-baby bleeding has almost completely stopped (finally!) and my milk supply has already begun to diminish even though I pump every 3-4 hours during the day and whenever little man wakes up at night.  I have Mt. Vesuvius erupting on my cheek, along with a flock of whiteheads around my nose.  Why oh why must I have zits and fine lines at the same time?

Hobbit-ish Potpurri: This, That & The Other

Hey Humble Readers...

As promised, this here is a post that has absolutely nothing to do with mummy-hood, babies, breastfeeding, or sleep schedules.  Instead you're going to get a bunch of the randomness that's been going through my head over the last couple of weeks.

*****
I'm hoping to resurrect the Foodie Friday posts again sometime soon.  I haven't been doing a whole lot of scratch cooking lately, but I did make the most incredible pork roast last weekend.  Of course, I didn't think to take any pics of it, but it was beautiful and it tasted heavenly.  And it was super easy... salt & pepper a pork loin roast and roast in a hot oven (425F) for about a half hour.  Remove from oven, and lower oven temp to 350F.  Spread grainy dijon mustard over the whole roast.  Press a generous amount of brown sugar into mustard (all over) and return to oven, until a meat thermometer reads 165F (it took about an hour).  Baste with drippings often.  Don't forget to allow the roast to rest for 15 minutes before slicing.  Drizzle with drippings when serving.

*****
I have confessed here before that I watch way too much tv.  But I have to say, the thing that could cure me of the habit is this summer's line-up of trashy reality tv.  The commercials are actually making me kind of sick with all the pseudo-match-making shows and Gor.don Ram.say crap (and you all know I LOVE cooking shows... I just can't stand him!).  Why can't they just run re-runs?  The joys of having ultra limited cable.

*****
Am I the only person who is intrigued by Snow White & The Huntsman?  Or at least, I am until I remember that Kri.sten Ste.wart is playing the lead.  The trailer looks great, I'm just not sure that I could handle a couple hours of her acting.  I also really want to see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Rock of Ages, The Dark Knight Rises, and the Odd Life of Timothy Green.  What's on your must see list for summer movies?

*****
I'm getting that urge to re-read Harry Potter again.  It's totally a summer thing.  As soon as the weather turns warm, I want to delve into the world of wizards and muggles.  It's kind of like the urge I get in the fall to read Tolkien.  I'm happy to say that I am experiencing a bit of an increase in my interest and ability to read again.  All through last fall and winter, I didn't have the focus to read more than a couple pages at a time.  I actually ordered a new book the other day, and I also finished reading a book written by a friend that I'm hoping to review for you all soon.

*****
You know you're anal retentive when you spend a couple of hours reorganizing one of your pin boards on Pinterest.  I had a sort of catch-all board that had a lot of miscellaneous things in it that had gotten a little out of hand.  So last night, I went through the whole thing and made a couple of new boards.  I really am an addict.  Oh, and while I'm discussing Pinterest can I vent a serious pet peeve?  It drives me crazy when people pin pictures of food/recipes and just put "Yum" or "I must make this soon" in the comment section.  Dang it, tell me what it is!  LOL.

*****
Well, I'm fading here.  I'm going to try to catch a bit of a nap while it's quiet in the hobbit hole.  Do you have any fantastic plans for the weekend?  We're going to the farmer's market tomorrow, and I'm planning on doing the grocery shopping ALL BY MYSELF!  I'm super stoked to get an hour or so just to be out on my own.

Hobbit-ish Potpurri: Lazy Bones Weekend Edition

Howdy Humble Readers...

I hope you're all having a fantastic weekend.  We've had a pretty good couple of days around the hobbit-hole.  Granted, they've been pretty lazy days and the hobbit-hole is in serious need of some cleaning, but I've been enjoying just 'being' with my Beloved and Ginny.

*****
My Beloved and I went to see Hunger Games last night... such a good adaptation of the book! Very well acted... Lenny Kravitz as Cinna was genius!  (Giving it 5 out of 5 hairy hobbit-toes way up!)  I was so happy to see that the few changes and omissions weren't central to the main plot.  My only real complaint was that we got to the theater a half hour before the movie started and we still ended up having to sit in the second row from the front.  Not the best vantage point.  Not to mention that I have a history of getting motion sickness at the movies (movies like Speed, the Bourne series, Constant Gardener... anything with documentary-like cinematography).  There was a stretch where I was concerned that I was going to have to leave the room because my head was spinning one way and my stomach was going the other way.

*****
Our only really productive activity today was to go grocery shopping.  I have recently switched grocery stores... AGAIN.  I've often voiced my dissatisfaction with a particular chain here above the 49th parallel (the Canadian Stupid-store), and yet every few years I find myself sucked back in.  The thing is, they have a great selection of international foods, and their produce is usually pretty good.  Whenever I'm looking for a new-to-me ingredient for a new-to-me recipe I can usually find it there.  But I hate the mad-house atmosphere and the fact that they only put out a limited supply of everything each day (even staples like milk) so once they're out, they're out.  Today wasn't too bad, but I do hate coming out of the grocery store frazzled.

*****
Speaking of cooking, you may (or may not) have noticed a lack of a Foodie Friday post yesterday.  That's because all my pics were on the netbook that died, and to upload pics to my Beloved's puter is a bit of a chore.  Hopefully, all will be in working order by the time my next monthly Ginny update rolls around next week.

*****
I decided that I needed a little kick in the butt when it comes to my virtual hobbit-hole, so I signed up for the April A-Z challenge.  Check out the groovy button on the right to find out how you can join in the fun.

*****
Because my Beloved and I are sharing a computer for the moment, I am totally sucking at ICLW this month.  I feel bad, because I have actually had a number of new visitors, but have yet to have a chance to get back to them.  Hopefully the next couple of days will allow me to have a little bit more computer time.  My new laptop *should* be here by the 26th.

*****
Embarrassing moment of the day: My dad showed up at about 5 this afternoon.  I knew that he was possibly going to be coming, but because his schedule is always so erratic when he's on the road, I usually get a call ahead of time to confirm if he's coming.  And that's usually when the flight-of-the-bumble-bee form of housekeeping kicks into high gear.  This time, no real warning... so Dad saw my house covered in dust, un-vaccuumed, and just a general mess.  Gah!  He may be coming for dinner tomorrow night, if his schedule allows, so I really should get my butt in gear and get some work done around here.

What chores have you been putting off in favour of having some down time?

Bloggity Summer Camp: The Question that Stumped Me

Howdy... Hey... Greetings Humble Readers... (I've been here so much today, I can't remember which greetings I've used, sorry!)

Three posts in one day!  Hokey dinah balonafish!  What's going on here?  Well, between it being Ginny's 8 month un-birthday and discovering that Kym is hosting 'Sock It To Me' again and Bloggity Summer Camp... well, just a lot happening today.  And it all must be read... so scroll down and I'll wait.  Just make sure to come back up here.  'Kay?  Go!

Waiting...

Waiting...

Waiting...

Checking my watch...

Whistling...

Back yet?

Hello?

Anyone?

Beuller?  Beuller?

Ok... so Bloggity Summer Camp.  Calliope's question today has honestly stumped me.  "Which movies or tv shows do you think are the most accurate portrayals of your life? If you could write the next scene of your day what would it be?"

I don't know.  Maybe a little bit of "You've Got Mail" and a little of the "Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood" with a little bit of "Everybody Loves Raymond" thrown in for good measure.

The next scene of my day?  One of those heart-warming scenes where the parents stand at the doorway of the nursery and get those cheesy grins as they watch their baby sleep, and then maybe one of those married couple scenes where the couple is in bed, her with the green goop on her face and him doing a crossword puzzle.  That's about it.

In reality, it will probably be doing a bit of tidying up, watching America's Got Talent, feeding the wee girl again at 11 and then maybe reading a few minutes before unconciousness takes me.

And now, it's safe to say, I'm all blogged out... see you tomorrow!

Blog Challenge Day 29: My Hopes, Dreams, and Plans for the Next Year

Good Afternoon Humble Readers...

It's hard to believe that I'm on the second to last of these 30 challenge posts.  When I started the blog challenge it was in hopes of improving my blog posting frequency and to get through the last month before the Halfling makes his/her appearance.  Well here we are, almost at the end.  Astounding!  The last two challenges are especially fitting at this point.  Today I'm to talk about my hopes, dreams, and plans for the next 365 days.

The things I'm hoping for: a safe and healthy delivery, a year of incredible firsts with the Halfling, and lots of patience for the challenges that lie ahead.

The things I'm dreaming about: all the sweet things that I'm sure most mother's dream about... little fingers and toes, baby smiles, that wonderful new baby smell, and holding this precious child in my arms.

The things I'm planning on: being successful with breastfeeding and cloth diapering, getting to K-town at least a couple of times so that my parents can get to know their new grandchild, and enjoying learning how to be a mother.

(and one thing that falls into all three categories... even tho it sounds incredibly naive, selfish and greedy... is to hopefully being pregnant with Halfling #2 by this time next year)

*****
As much as I want to go to see HP7 tomorrow night, it's not going to happen.  I don't have the wherewithal to stand in line for tickets and be in the mad crush of people.  Instead, Beloved and I are going to get our tickets in advance for Monday or Tuesday evening, after the initial rush.  It will still be busy, but not as insane.  So, if you see it this weekend... I don't want to hear about it!  Got it?!?  :)

Blog Challenge Day 2: My Favourite Movie

Good Morning Humble Readers...

So, today on the list I'm supposed to talk about my favourite movie.  The thing is, there are far too many movies that I love for me to write about just one.  Instead, I'm giving you my top ten...  These are the movies that I could watch over and over and over.

Not in any particular order...

1 - The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (has to count as one movie because the story is not complete with just one)
2 - White Christmas
3 - Driving Miss Daisy
4 - The Color Purple
5 - Harry Potter (again, all of them have to be taken together)
6 - Much Ado About Nothing
7 - The Breakfast Club
8 - Pride & Prejudice (the Colin Firth version)
9 - Star Trek (the newest incarnation)
10 - Rudy

What are the movies that you can't live without?

*****
While I know that it's early yet, I'm starting to get the itch to begin my Christmas baking.  I've spent some time this morning going over my usual recipes (pfefferneusse, shortbread, and peanut butter marshmallow squares), as well as surfing for something new (that will freeze well).  Do you have anything that's a must have for your family in the holiday season?

Hobbit-ish Potpurri: Let's Go To The Movies (Let's Go See The Stars)

Good Morning Humble Readers...

First up, 10 hobbit bonus points to anyone who can name the movie that my subtitle for today's post comes from.  I'll give you a hint... it's a musical.

*****
So, you probably noticed the two countdown clocks at the top of this page.  I think it's a tad ironic that the movie I have been looking forward to for almost three years (basically since the first time I started reading the last Harry Potter book) is going to be released 10 days before my due date.  This little halfling had better stay put until then!  ;)  I was also hoping to add a Hobbit movie countdown, but the dates for that one keep getting pushed back.  Come on, Mr. Jackson... take pity on a poor little hobbit!

*****
My Beloved and I went and saw Toy Story 3 last night.  It wasn't as good as the original of course, but it was still pretty darn good.  It had me crying at the end... and even my Beloved got misty.  There were some really great funny moments, and quite a few adult jokes throughout.  I have to say, I loved the addition of Barbie and Ken to the crew.

*****
I want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who offered their info and advice on my last post.  On the advice of my OB's nurse I chose not to take the meds until I am able to discuss it with Dr U.  I have a phone consult scheduled with him on Monday.  I am feeling much better about the meds and that they will be okay, I just want to hear it from Dr U.  In the mean time, I have been a good girl and have stayed very hydrated and away from salt as much as I can.  I have never been one to cook with salt (my mom never did either), but I always have added salt at the table.  I have also been more aware of the sodium that is in prepared foods (who knew there was so much sodium in chocolate milk?!?).

*****
I missed out on doing a Canada Day post this year.  I had to work and it ended up being a crazy busy day.  We did a hot dog/lemonade stand to raise money for our in-house literacy fund.  It was a lot of fun, and we raised a ton of money.  Afterward, tho, I was exhausted.  I am so looking forward to the day when I can share weekends and stat holidays with my husband.

Friday Night

How are you tonight, humble readers?

I'm feeling much better today. Thank you so much for all your kind words and thoughts! I really don't know what to make of that stupid cold. It never did amount to much of anything... just enough to make me miserable for a few hours a day. We'll see if it comes back tomorrow.

For those of you who care about the weather on the flatland, let me tell you... it's just gone plain ol' crazy! Earlier today it was abso-smurfly gorgeous! Well above 0 (that would be in Celsius for my friends south of the border), things were melting like mad, giant puddles forming everywhere... Now, outside my window it's snowing like mad! And it's not normal flatland snow... it's like the snow I remember from Seattle. Giant wet sloppy flakes. There's already about 3cm on my balcony. Winter is never ever going to end!

Tonight, my beloved and I went out for a not-so-romantic dinner (A&W in the car, sitting in the parking lot of the movie theater) and a movie. We went and saw 'Duplicity'. It was a really good spy vs. spy movie. I loved the fight scene at the very beginning... so awesome! I won't ruin it for you... but it does get 4.5 out of 5 hairy hobbit toes way up! The only thing that wasn't so fun tonight was getting back into an onion-ring-smelling car after the movie.

A few of you have asked for the recipes from the dinners I mentioned earlier this week. I will post them on the weekend. They are both so simple that I'm embarassed by it... ;)

I went through with it today, and called my OB's office. AF is due tomorrow (temps dropped like a stone this morning as I knew they would), and yes I fibbed. Of course, as it would happen, I was only able to fib to the answering service, and as of 5pm today I had never heard back... Divine retribution? Entirely possible. Hopefully, I will get a call from them bright and early on Monday.

One final thing tonight... for any of you out there who pray... one of my staff is having a rough go. 'Little K' is only 17, and recently she found a lump in her breast. I know that it's unlikely that it will be anything serious, but she's really upset about it (as I know I would be too). The doctors removed the lump earlier this week and are doing some testing, but the poor kid is pretty freaked out. Without going into a ton of details, she has very little support at home and has had to face this pretty much on her own. This girl needs some peace and comfort in her life.

Thanks so much for reading... :)

Whatever Happened To Miss Manners?

I have been growing more and more cynical about our society over recent years. Maybe I'm hitting that age where everything isn't as good as it was when I was a kid. Maybe I'm destined to be a grouchy old bat who yells at little kids (please God, I hope not!). Maybe my expectations are just too high. Maybe I've just worked in retail too long.

What is wrong with people? Where have all their manners gone?

No one says thank you. No one says excuse me. No one picks up after themselves.

Let me give you an example of how far our society has fallen. A few nights ago, Valentine's Day actually, my Beloved and I went to a movie. I knew that the main theater in our small city has notoriously slow lines for tickets and concessions, so I planned accordingly. We arrived early and my Darling One got in the concession line while I stood in the ticket holders line outside the theater. While in line people pushed past me to get to the ladies room without so much as an 'excuse me' or a 'sorry'.

Then there were the 'crowders'. You know who they are. The people who have no understanding of personal space and persist in bumping you with their elbows or purse or whatever while they are in line behind you. No matter how many half-steps forward you take to move away from them, they just take it as a cue to move even closer.

And once I was finally in the theater, things went from bad to worse. First there was the man behind us who was loudly shoveling popcorn into his mouth... and chewing with his mouth open. *ICK* There were the two teenage girls sitting two rows in front of us texting each other throughout the entire movie. Then we were serenaded by a chorus of burps and belches and other disgusting chewing sounds from every side. And finally, there was the I-need-to-pee-every-ten-minutes-because-I-just-drank-a-large-Coke girl in our row.

People, the movie theater is not your living room! If you are that free with your bodily functions in the privacy of your own home, that's one thing. But please, don't subject the rest of us to it!

Another area that continues to shock me is people's behavior in a retail environment. I know that I am jaded in this area but sometimes people can still amaze me in their lack of manners. People interupt conversations, they snap their fingers at me when they want assistance, they pull product off the shelf and leave it on the floor. They get grumpy at me when I ask that they return to the coffee shop in our store to get a lid for their drink (Hello... our product is paper... one drop of your venti half-caff mocha with extra caramel drizzle and a book is ruined!). Then there are the ones refuse to get a lid, spill their coffee, and don't bother to clean it up or even ask for help in cleaning it up. People use language that twenty years ago would have had them banned from any store, and they verbally abuse my staff (no, a 16 year old cashier is not resposible for the difference in Canadian and American pricing and calling her a b*tch isn't going to get you anywhere except escorted out of my store).

And my personal favorite... parents who bring their children into our store, plunk them down in front of the toy table in our kids department, and then wander off to go look for something on the other side of the store. We are not babysitters! Heaven help us if something happens to one of these little abandoned angels while mommy is off perusing Oprah's latest pick.

Ok, so this post has wandered a bit. Basically, it comes down to three things...

Say Please!

Say Thank you!

Live the Golden Rule!

(And for those who have forgotten... Do unto others as you would have done unto you!)

Ok, rant over... for now.
