While I might not be a hobbit genetically, I do believe that I am one culturally. A homebody at heart, with a fear of (but slight craving for) adventure, who values simple things like good food, good books, and good friends. Chronicling the journey of the unlikely pairing of a Hobbit and an Ent, who have travelled down the road through infertility & RPL, toward building our family. We've come a long way, and now with two precious wee-lings in tow, our road goes ever on and on...

Wet
According to Ginny, it's "drippin'" outside. Big drips and little drips. LOTS of drips.
I don't know if you've heard, or if it would even get a mention on your news, but our province is in a serious situation.
For the past 24 hours, more than two thirds of our province (geographically speaking. Probably three quarters of our population) have been under evacuation alert due to serious flooding. The big city to the south has hundreds of thousands of people evacuated and there are sections of the Trans-Canada highway (THE major highway across Canada) that have been washed out. I just heard on the news that the zoo in the big city to the south may be moving the big cats from the zoo there to the jail cells below the courthouse... crazy.
Here in the Shire, we are fine. The Shire declared a state of emergency last night. Our river is likely going to crest at around noon today (four hours from now), but the way that our city was laid out means that very few homes or businesses will be endangered by the high waters. Our primary concern is for the water treatment plant. The hobbit-hole is well above the risk of flood, thank heaven.
Rainfall has been breaking old records left and right. The last major flood in the big city to the south was in 2005, and they are saying that the water levels are twice as high as they were then.
Please send prayers and good thoughts for those who have had to leave their homes, and for the emergency responders and the military who have been called in to help.

Hobbit-ish Potpurri: Odds & Sods
Thunderstorms appear to be weather du jour. We've had some major downpours over the last few days, and honestly I'm loving it. After the heat wave we had before we went on vacation and the desert heat in K-town last week, I was so ready for some cooler temps. Ginny has been enthralled by the heavy cloud bursts and the thunder.

AF has shown up, and I confess she's kicking my ass. All those women in my life who told me that cramps get better or at least easier to deal with after you have kids are lying sacks of dragon poop. I'm in a lot of pain here, and tyl.enol isn't touching it. Ugh.

In other cycle-related news... last week I experienced the epitome of irony. I had what I can only describe as the most incredible, copious EWCM. Seriously, I have never EVER experienced anything like it. I was always one of those women who had to do internal checks for CM in order to catch the scant amount of the good stuff I would get. This was immense, and it lasted for two days. Now, when our family building days are over I get enough to sink a battleship.

While we were in K-town, I saw a couple of movies, and they were polar opposites. First, I went to see "Magic Mike" with my Mom and my sister. While it was entertaining, and certainly drool-worthy, it had the crappiest script I've ever seen in a movie. Honestly, I think they were ad libbing most of it. Channing Tatum is lovely to look at, but this movie certaily didn't do anything to prove his acting chops. I suspect that it will be up for a dozen Razzie awards next winter.
The second movie I went to see was an incredible contrast. My Beloved and I had a date night while in K-town, our first since Pippin was born. "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" was incredibly sweet, moving, and so beautifully acted by some of the best actors of the age. Anytime you can combine Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, and Penelope Wilton (yes... Cousin Matthew's mother from Downton Abbey!) you get sheer genius. If you haven't seen this movie, please do yourself a favour and go see it.

We're planning on taking the wee-lings to a street performers festival this weekend. Seeing as it's basically free, I'm hoping that it will be entertaining for all of us. I want to expose Ginny to as many different fun, cultural, and educational experiences as I can. With our budgetary constraints, anytime I can find something free, I have to give it a shot.

If you are a praying type person, please send out some prayers for my Beloved. He's getting frustrated with his job search. He's in a tough spot right now. While he's been applying for a ton of different positions, so far there have only been a couple of nibbles that would be a step backward for him or would require us to move which isn't an option at this point.
He's sort of in a limbo area in terms of his qualifications. He's worked for years as an accountant and a controller. He's got far more experience than your run of the mill bookkeeper, and yet he doesn't have the accounting designations (like a CGA) to back it up. A lot of job listings have said that relevant experience will be considered in lieu of having a designation, but he's just not getting the calls. The obvious solution is to get him designated (there's a few courses he needs to take), but that costs money that we don't have. He's feeling very discouraged.

Fun and Not-So-Fun
When I stopped by Mel's place this morning I was pleasantly surprised that I hadn't missed the Annual International Blog Delurking Week! I always end up missing it... but the stars aligned this year. Yay!
The point of Delurking Week is just what the name implies... all those people who are out there who stop by my little hobbit-hole, but don't comment (and I KNOW you're out there) are invited to delurk, even just once. So all of you out there, step up to the mic, say hi, and let me know that you're here. I'll return the favour! And if you are stuck for something to say, why don't you tell me what kinds of things you read (besides blogs, of course)?

On a completely different topic, Humble Readers, I have a request... for prayers/good thoughts/healthy vibes for my mom.
I know I have mentioned this before, but my mom is a survivor. As in, a five time cancer survivor. Cervical cancer (removed and treated with radiation), uterine cancer (hysterectomy and radiation), lung cancer (removed 85% of her left lung, chemo and radiation), non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (removed a long strand of lymph nodes from her neck along with a good chunk of muscle tissue, chemo and radiation), and lesions on her brain (surgery).
Her last go round, just before Beloved and I got married (about this time, five years ago), ended with a truly miraculous healing. The doctors told her to get her affairs in order, and that even if she survived the brain surgery, she couldn't expect to survive the year.
Two hours out of surgery, she was awake and talking and in no pain (minimal pain meds). Two weeks later she was, while not 100% her old self, very actively working on planning my wedding. One month after surgery, the doctors determined that chemo was unnecessary as there was no sign of any remaining cancerous cells (there had been some significant concern about her thyroid as well as a recurrence of the lymphoma). Three months later, she was given a completely clean bill of health, which has been renewed every year when she has gone for her annual check up with her oncologist.
Just before the holidays, my mom found a lump. (Good heavens, how I hate that word.) It's in the same general area as where the lymphoma started.
Thankfully, she always has her check up in January. She saw her oncologist today, and while the doc was generally positive (all of Mom's bloodwork came back clear, as did her annual chest xray and other tests), she was concerned enough about the lump to book Mom for an urgent CAT scan (no date yet). If the scan shows anything questionable, then there will be biopsies and surgery.
My mom is an incredibly strong lady. However, one lasting effect of all the cancers and treatments has been that she deals with a lot of anxiety. Beyond the physical ramifications of facing the "Big C" again, I'm concerned that this could do a number on her emotionally.
Please send whatever prayers/good thoughts or vibes you can spare her way. Personally, I'm praying that she will get a quick date for the scan and that it will show something benign like a cyst or something. And that she can live without fear until those results come in.
Thanks Humble Readers... I appreciate it.

Prayer Request
The 14-month-old son of one of my Beloved's coworkers was seriously burned while at daycare two days ago. He has 3rd degree burns all over his back. He's been taken to the big children's hospital in Edmonton (2 hours north of here). The poor little boy is obviously in terrible pain, and if he survives the initial healing process, he has a long road of skin grafts, surgeries, and other treatment.
Please pray, send good thoughts... whatever.

More Hobbit-ish Potpurri
Today's post is just another collection of randomness from the last few days. Nothing big is going on... Kind of like the calm before the storm of the holidays.
*********
Cycle update: Today is CD 22, 8dpo. Five days until AF is due. Phantom symptoms chose to really kick in today. I was nauseous for most of the morning, and still feel just a tad queezy. Mild dizziness off and on. Of course, the 'girls' are killing me, but that's par for the course during my tww. I will not test... I will not test...
*********
We had my Beloved's mom over for dinner last night. We rarely get to host her at our place, so it was nice to have her come for dinner and to see our pictures from NYC. She wants us to think she is doing ok, but I know that she is still struggling. She didn't mention Dad once last night, but I think that might be her way of coping.
*********
I went out for lunch today with my pastor. She is so easy to talk to, and she has walked down the IF road too. She is in the midst of some difficult stuff right now, and if you pray, please lift her up. Spiritual leaders are always targets.

I took myself shopping this afternoon, and went into Ba.th & Body Wo.rks unchaperoned. Bit of a mistake. They had their room scent diffusers on sale. I ended up getting Autumn Leaves, Ginger Vanilla, and Spring Bamboo. All of them are lovely! I also got some lotion for my Beloved. It's a constant search to find a lotion for him that he likes... either it smells too strong or it causes him to break out. We'll see about this one.
*********
On my way out of the mall, I stopped at a new tea place and got an iced ginger tea infusion. All of their teas are brewed from loose leaves, and it smelled wonderful in the store. The one I ordered was supposed to help settle my stomach. Thing is it tasted so bad that it made me feel even worse. It was a waste of $5. Bummer!

I have really loved this month's ICLW. The list was huge, and there were a ton of new blogs (at least to me). It's really been a lot of fun. I have ten more blogs to check out, and then I will have visited everyone (except for the few password protected ones). So many incredible stories in this community!

On the menu tonight: Mandarin Almond Chicken, with rice. Yummy!

Please Continue -
Dad has been unresponsive all day, and the neurologist thinks that more damage has been done overnight.
I won't be posting for the next few days.
Stay well everyone!

Not the Greatest Day Ever
Today has been chock full of crap, all the way around.
I woke up with that feeling you get just before you get a cold. You know that weird scratchy feeling in your throat, and all you want to do is sleep.
Then, while I was in the midst of my pity party (I am a huge wimp when I'm sick), half the cable went out. And it was the half that has channels that I usually watch.
Then, I got to work and discovered that tonight I was only going to have one experienced person working the sales floor and that I was going to be training two brand new staff member... brand spankin' new. They were scared of the customers, scared of the phone, and scared of the computers. (Ok, they weren't that bad, I was just running around like a chicken with my head cut off)
And then, my Beloved got a phone call that no one wants to get (and the kind that reveals my whining as the selfishness that it really is). My FIL had a stroke this morning. Mom and Dad C were in a small, rather remote town in northern British Columbia visiting my Beloved's brother and sister, and their families.
Dad C has had some heart trouble in the past (a double bypass two summers ago) so this is not entirely unexpected, but he had been doing so well lately.
What we have been told so far:
- it happened around 10:30 this morning
- he has no mobility on his right side and he is unable to speak
- he's been moved from the small rural hospital to Prince George, a larger town 3 hours east of where they were
- the doctors say that it was a major bleed, but only time will tell
- he's not agitated and is alert
- he recognizes family members and smiles whenever they come in the room.
- according to my Beloved's sister, 'it's not life or death'
So, as of right now, we are staying put. They are hoping that in a few days or a week he will be able to be transferred to Calgary. (altho they also mentioned Vancouver, which is no help to any of the family out here as that puts him even further away, but whatever they determine is best I guess)
We are worried, scared, and torn.
Please pray, send good vibes, whatever...
