Week 38: This Is It!

Greetings Humble Readers...

Hoo boy!  Here it is, my last ever pregnancy update.  Crazy town.

This week has been good.  Slower than the last few, both in how it passed and how I was moving.  Thankfully, the anxiety hasn't gotten worse, and some days I have been able to almost shove it into a box in my mind.  I've also really given up on bending to pick things up off the floor.  If it falls and I can't get it, and Ginny's not able or willing to pick it up for me, it stays on the floor until my Beloved gets home.  And I'm not ashamed of that.  :)

Ginny has been acting... different... the last few days.  I commented on it on Sunday, but her need to be next to, on top of, or touching Mummy has really gone over the top.  I'm sure she knows that something is up.   Of course, she doesn't understand that there's a baby in Mummy's tummy, but she knows that there is change in the air.

I started pumping yesterday.  There are some concerns about pumping before baby arrives because it can bring on contractions, but given that my c-section is only two days away, I'm willing to risk it.  It was suggested by an L&D nurse that I pump and hopefully collect enough for the Halfling to have as a first feeding while I'm in recovery, to help stave off a blood sugar low (a real risk for GD babies, especially those whose mothers were insulin dependant).  My first go round produced less than a milliliter, barely enough to cover the bottom of the little bottle, but I'm hopeful for better things to come.  It was hard to relax and not watch the teeny little bit of colostrum drip into the bottle, but I confess I felt like doing a happy dance when I saw that I had something to show for my efforts.  If this doesn't work, we'll go with formula of course, but I hope that I'll be able to do this.

Good news from today's NST... my blood pressure is well within target, 132/68.  Yay!  I was a little concerned given that Ginny has been a bit of a stinker this morning, and I was having to chase after her quite a bit.  The Halfling's heartrate was running between 140 and the upper 160s.  I didn't actually get to talk with Dr. W today, as she was busy trying to turn a stubborn breech baby in the next curtain.  I will be hearing from the L&D ward sometime tomorrow about my surgery time.  If it's any time before noon, I have to be there at 6am.  I have a list of protocols for my meds for the 12 hours before, and immediately following the surgery.  I can't believe it's time.

My mom will be here in the next hour or so.  All that's left on the to do list for today is to make the bed when the dryer is done.  We have a few little errands to run tomorrow, but nothing big.

Onto the update...

How far along? 38w0d... 2 DAYS TO GO!

Maternity clothes?  One pair of mat jeans is officially dead.  The stretchy part at the top is unravelling at an alarming rate, and even tho the denim is in good shape, I don't think these ones will be going in the donation bag when all is said and done.  I'm going to need to find a craft to do with denim, I guess.

Body Oddities? Gassy beyond belief.  Seriously, it's embarrassing.  Water retention is a bit more constant, but no other indicators of pre-e.  Very thirsty, all the time.  Blood sugars have been great, unless I do something spectacularly stupid.  And I think if I were going to be going to 40wks, my belly button might actually pop.

Sleep? Pretty good mostly, but I'm finding that I'm having to nap during the day again.  That's a little tough to pull off with Ginny being on a bit of a napping strike, but thank heaven for the play pen.  I can at least get a little rest, inspect my eyelids for holes for a few minutes here and there and know that she's safe and content.

Intense Dreams? About my old store, about delivery, about housework.

Best moment this week? While it's in no way a good thing, I had a really funny moment at church on Sunday.  I was talking with an older lady about the planned c/s and everything, and another older lady I only know by sight joined our conversation.  When she caught on to the subject matter she got this hilarious shocked look on her face and then said, "Oh my goodness!  I had no idea you were pregnant!"  I burst out laughing.  I mean, yes, I'm fat, very fat.  But good heavens, I should hope that at this point, even the most unobservant person could notice the pregnant-lady-waddle.  The look on her face was priceless...

Worst moment? Just a lot of moments where I can't get up from a seated position or walk when I first stand up.  I'm so sick of waddling.

Movement? Still good.  Every now and then I get a really huge kick or knee in the spleen. I keep reminding myself to savour every one of these moments, because it's not going to be happening again.

Food cravings/aversions? Nothing in particular, and everything all at once.  I'm just hungry!

Rings? Off.  Hopefully I'll be wearing them again in a couple of weeks.  Weight gain this week has been a bit higher than past weeks, but I know that a lot if it is water retention.

Gender? Still thinking it's a girl.  If it is, I confess I will be a teeny wee bit sad because we do have a couple adorable little boy sleepers that we've never used (they were gifts before Ginny was born).  They'll just get passed on to the next little boy we know.

Medical Concerns? Gestational Diabetes (insulin 5x a day), High blood pressure (100mg of lobetalol 3x a day), continuing heartburn (60mg of pantaloc), low lying placenta, low iron

What I miss?  iced coffee, sushi (will be my first meal at home after the Halfling arrives), real iced tea

What I look forward to? Have I mentioned I'm planning on having sushi???  :)  Honestly, I just can't wait to meet this little person, to introduce him/her to Ginny, to know that our family is complete.

Emotional State?  Oh man... so hormonal.  Bouncing between tears, laughter, anxiety, and insanity on an hourly basis.

Week 37: Full Term Anxiety

Howdy Humble Readers...

Well, here we are.  Full term.  Wow.

I confess that I have been finding myself overcome with a building level of anxiety over the last several days.  I have so many fears for this Halfling (birth defects, chronic illness, and even the worst), for the c-section (pre-eclampsia, complications, needing to be completely put under, and even the worst for myself), and for the ramifications that any of these things will have on me, my Beloved, Ginny, and our family.  Whew... just writing all that out has made me feel nauseated, my heartrate to increase, and it's hard to breathe.

I was scared when I was expecting Ginny, but nothing like this.  It wakes me up in the middle of the night (which is why this post is being written in the dark watch of the night).  It slams into me in the middle of the day.  It stops me dead in my tracks.  The c-section is on May 10th, and really all I want is for it to be May 11th, with everything being okay.  I pray that this fear goes away.

I know from my ultrasounds and regular monitoring that the Halfling is as healthy as can be.  There are no indications that there is anything wrong.  At my NST yesterday, the only real issue was again my blood pressure (up again over last week... and meds have been increased again).  The Halfling wasn't feeling overly cooperative, and kept moving away from the monitor, but the heartrate was strong (145+ bpm) and lots of good movement.  I've had a couple of headaches this week, but Dr. W and I agree that it was likely from changing the dosage of my meds.  I've also had some water retention, but it comes and goes.  There have been no other signs of pre-e at all.

Enough wallowing.  On to this week's update...

How far along? 37w0d (9 days to go)

Maternity clothes?  I am sooooo sick of them.  They are so tired and worn.  I'm ready to go back to my regular clothes.

Body Oddities? other than the usual litany of discomforts, my hips have been locking up a lot.  It's been making getting up from the couch or bed very challenging.  I've had some terrible gas lately... really it's awful.  I think I lost part of my mucous plug yesterday.  Oh, and while it won't likely pop, my belly button is disappearing.

Sleep? Some nights good, other nights not so much.  Fear and pain wake me, almost as often as my bladder does.

Intense Dreams? None that I remember this week.

Best moment this week? Yesterday at my NST, when I went to sit up after they were done monitoring me, my stomach was in the funniest shape.  Instead of being round and huge like usual, it was like the halfling was pushing straight out from the middle of my belly.  The sides of my stomach had gone completely flat and there was this mountain right in the middle.  It was hilarious.

Worst moment? Any time the fears roll over me.

Movement? A lot more in the middle of the night.  Perhaps connected to the anxiety that wakes me up.

Food cravings/aversions? Hungry ALL THE TIME!  The smell of red meat still bothers me.. I wonder if it always will.

Rings? Still off.  I tried them on the other day, when I was feeling relatively water retention free and they almost fit.  I look forward to wearing them again.

Gender? Still thinking that the Halfling is a girl.  Only a few days left to get your opinion in on the poll to the right.

Medical Concerns? Gestational Diabetes (insulin 5x a day), High blood pressure (100mg of lobetalol 3x a day), continuing heartburn (60mg of pantaloc), low lying placenta, low iron

What I miss?  Sleep, iced coffee, being able to pick up Ginny easily

What I look forward to?  moving forward

Emotional State? fearful, happy, terrified, excited, anxious... oh yeah, and the hormonal biotch is still there too.

Week 36: Busy Mommy, Busy Halfling

Greetings Humble Readers...

Happy Tuesday!  Ginny and I have just gotten home from the hospital where I had my weekly NST and confab with Dr. W.  It went pretty well, other than the Halfling choosing to be difficult to pin down for monitoring, and my bp being a little higher than we would all like to see (145/67).  Dr. W has adjusted my hbp meds again, but not as high as what Dr. B had them through the fall.  After being difficult to find at the beginning of the test, the Halfling was rockin' and rollin'... heart rate bouncing between 170-180.

I also had a conversation with the pre-admissions nurse about what to expect for my time in the hospital.  A few things have changed since last time, like my Beloved can have a camera in the OR for during delivery and they've changed a few protocols for post-op pain management (rectal suppositories... yippee).

Unfortunately, Ginny chose to wake up at 6am today (two hours earilier than normal) so she was a bit of a bear during the whole appointment.  But the nurses were understanding, and helped me out while I was strapped to the monitor.
Other than all that, things around the hobbit-hole are good.  No recurrence of the craziness next door.  To do list is coming along nicely... I fixed Ginny's baby blanket yesterday, and I'm going to spend some time tonight working on the Halfling's blanket (about 2/3 done).  Carpet cleaners are coming on Friday... Other than a bizarre pizza dough malfunction last night, things are just tickity-boo, as my bio-dad would say.

On to this week's update...

How far along? 36w0d (OMG... two weeks left!)

Maternity clothes? I actually think I have found a use for these worn out maternity t-shirts that I've been wearing.  I found a fun tutorial on making t-shirt shag rugs on Pinterest and I think I'm going to give it a shot, some time maybe next fall.  I've also decided that when I transition into my nursing bras in a couple weeks, I'm going to throw out all my regular bras.  That way I will be forced to go for a fitting and buy some new ones!

Body Oddities? All the usual stuff, plus serious hot flashes, intense hip pain, and some real contractions when I've been on my feet for too long.

Sleep? A few good nights a week, a few bad.

Intense Dreams? HOLY CRAP... this week has been insane!  Quasi-naughty dreams about Maks from Dancing With The Stars, bizarre dreams about disgusting vericose veins, and don't even get me started on the dreams that news story about the baby born with 6 legs inspired.

Best moment this week? Finishing the spring cleaning.

Worst moment? Lots and lots of hip pain.  So bad that it wakes me up in the night.  I'm trying to take it easier now that the spring cleaning is done.

Movement? Still frequent enough for me not to worry, but definitely less often now that things are getting a little crowded in there.

Food cravings/aversions? I'm hungry all the time, but I can't eat much at one time without feeling nauseated.  This has been causing a few problems with my blood sugars (extreme lows), so I've been having to tweak my insulin down a few notches every day.  And yes, I still want Milanos and/or apple pie filling (ice cold).

Rings? Off.  I've been retaining a fair bit of water this week.  I think I've probably passed my top weight when I was carrying Ginny.  Still less than 10 pounds over my pre-pregnancy weight.

Gender? Still thinking that the Halfling is a girl.  We'll know soon.

Medical Concerns? Gestational Diabetes (insulin 5x a day), High blood pressure (100mg of lobetalol 2x a day), continuing heartburn (60mg of pantaloc), low lying placenta, low iron

What I miss? walking rather than waddling, iced coffee

What I look forward to?  doing my freezer cooking this weekend, crafting with some friends tomorrow night

Emotional State? I can't wait for this crazy pregnant biotch who's taken up residence in my head to take a flying leap.  My poor Beloved never knows when I'm going to snap.

Hobbit-ish Potpurri: Anniversary Happenings, et al

Hey Humble Readers...

Yesterday was a crazy busy day around the hobbit-hole.  Add to the usual Saturday busy-ness (grocery shopping, tidying up the house, etc), it was our 5th anniversary.  It was certainly a different kind of day than the day we were married... it was blustery and snowy here yesterday, but five years ago in K-town we had a pretty nice day.  Nice enough to have pictures taken outside.  Like this one...

Anyway, my Beloved planned our anniversary celebration and he did a great job!  He booked a 'date night' at Heriage Ranch here in town.  We had a beautiful one hour carraige ride, all snuggled up under cozy blankets.  We got to see a family of deer through the trees, and even though it was chilly, we had a wonderful time.  I just wish we would have remembered to take some pictures.

After the carraige ride, we were shown into a private dining room and he had pre-ordered our meal, so it just started coming.  A small antipasto platter, followed by tossed salads (I had a house made maple vinagrette... YUM!).  Then the BEST steak I have ever eaten (seriously Humble Readers... OMG!  It melted!), served with grilled asparagus, a baked potato, and garlic bread.  And yes, I was a bad girl and had dessert, too... chocolate peanut butter pie.  Because the package deal that my Beloved chose included alcohol, and we skipped that (obviously... I'm so looking forward to my first glass of wine when we go to K-town this summer!), the restaurant gave us two free movie passes.

My Beloved is an incredible blessing in my life.  I know I have said it before, but he makes me a better person every day simply by being by my side.  There aren't enough words in the English language to express how much I love him, and how honoured I am that he chose me to share his life.

*****
Also on the schedule yesterday was a big event at our church.  We, as a congregation, have been without a regular pastor for more than two years.  After a very long and drawn out call process, we chose a new pastor and he accepted the call.  He's only just recently graduated from seminary, and yesterday we had the privilege of being present at his ordination (when he officially 'becomes' a pastor).  It was a very moving service.  I wasn't the only one in tears when his wife and daughter (8 years old, she was also the crucifer for the service... she looked so proud carrying in the cross ahead of the procession of clergy) presented him with his stole.  I wish we could have stayed for the reception after, but we had to get home to meet the sitter and head out for our evening.

*****
I had an NST this morning, so when my Beloved headed off to church, Ginny and I headed down the street to the hospital.  Everything went really well... blood pressure 132/69, Halfling's heartrate in the upper 150s, lots of movement, no contractions to speak of.  Ginny was a perfect angel the whole time, eating her goldfish crackers and charming the nurses.  The only downside was when Dr. W asked about my bloodsugars, and I confessed that I was a bad girl yesterday.  She gave me a dirty look and reminded me about watching my weight gain (I'm down 2 pounds by the way).

*****
Tomorrow is a big cooking day.  I'm planning on making a big batch of marinara and a couple of shepherd's pies to freeze.  I've got a list of things that I want to make and freeze in the next weeks, and I need to get cracking on them.  Time is running out!

Week 31: First NST

Greetings Humble Readers...

I had my first NST this time around yesterday morning.  It's early to start them, but Dr. W scheduled it for when she was the on-duty OB at the hospital so we could get an appointment in this month (her schedule is incredibly busy, as she's the only female OB in town).

As I suspected, Dr. W didn't know what the results were from my last u/s, so the placenta previa issue is still a mystery.  She was significantly annoyed when I told her that the u/s tech didn't do an internal scan.  I strongly suspect there will be an appointment with "Wanda" in my near future.

The test went well.  The Halfling's heartrate was around 142 bpm, and he/she was moving around significantly so all looked good there.  My blood pressure was a little bit high (not scary high, but higher than it has been for the last couple of months), but I really think it was because there was another woman in the maternity triage room who was seriously in labour.  They were getting a room prepped for her, but she was very vocal throughout her contractions, and no matter how much you understand why, when you're lying on a hospital bed next to someone who's moaning and crying in pain... it has an affect.

Ginny was with me at the NST, and she did amazingly well.  She sat in her stroller, eating her goldfish crackers and smiling at the nurses.  She didn't fuss a bit.  She seemed to like listening to the Halfling's heartbeat.

On to this week's update...

How far along? 31w0d

Maternity clothes? Yup.  They're getting tired.

Body Oddities? VERY dry skin, alternating constipation and IBS flares, back ache, cracking joints, super sore & slightly leaky boobs, dry/itchy eyes, leg cramps, round ligament pain, tingly fingertips, tired, gassy, Braxton Hicks, tendonitis in my thumbs, NEW THIS WEEK: pubic bone pain, hot flashes

Sleep? Not bad actually.  I'm now freezing my Beloved out of the bedroom because of the aforementioned hot flashes.  I have to have the fan on every night and no blankets, and if I could, I would have the window open.  My Beloved buries himself up to his eyebrows with the duvet in order to prevent frostbite.

Intense Dreams? Nothing memorable this week.

Best moment this week? My NST yesterday.  Ginny was incredibly well-behaved, and the Halfling co-operated nicely throughout the test.

Worst moment? I've had a couple of instances of some really intense round ligament pain.  Usually happens at very inopportune moments.

Movement? Following each meal (Halfling really reacted strongly to the chicken curry last night), and all evening.

Food cravings/aversions? Chocolate-mint anything (a combo I normally don't like at all), chocolate anything, sweet anything..

Rings? Had to take them off this morning.  Weight is holding steady, but I have been dealing with some water retention.

Gender? Still think it's a girl, and Dr. W referred to the Halfling as 'she' at my NST.  She-hobbit is also leading in the poll on the right.  But I was sooooo sure that Ginny was going to be a boy, and well... we know how that turned out.  :)

Medical Concerns? Gestational Diabetes (insulin 5 times a day), High blood pressure (on 50mg of lobetalol 3x daily), continued heartburn (on 60mg of Pan.taloc daily), kidney stones, low lying placenta, low iron.

What I miss?  Iced chai lattes, being able to shave my legs while in the shower, being able to go from sitting to standing without having to pee right away.

What I look forward to? Going to see the Hunger Games this weekend, an end to winter (it just won't die!), possibly doing some Ikea shopping in a few weeks.

Emotional State?  Pretty good for the most part.  I do get easily frustrated tho (like when I got a bill from the government today for a mess up on my taxes from last year... grrr!).
