Good Morning Humble Readers...
I just saw Dr. U. All is still well on the blood pressure front, and the Halfling looks great (he/she is lying transverse right now).
But the bad news... I failed the gestational diabetes test in a very VERY big way. I scored a 12 (1-7 is ok, 7-10 is borderline, 10+ sucks). So, now I'm waiting to hear from the diabetes education clinic and a nutritionist. I have to go back and see Dr. U in two weeks.
I knew that this is was a distinct possibility, but hearing it from my doctor just felt like a kick in the gut. Anyone with tips on how to travel this road, please send me your secrets on how to get through this without losing my mind.
I'm off to see what I can find on GD from Dr. Google.
While I might not be a hobbit genetically, I do believe that I am one culturally. Damn hon, I'm sorry you have to go down this road. The key to managing any type of diabetes is managing the carbs. Try to limit them to around 150 per day (50 ish per meal). Do NOT totally eliminate them because your body needs them to function.
ReplyDeleteI have seen a number of friends deal with this, and the worst part seems to have been injections...and we are all pros at that, right? It will be totally fine, just breathe.
ReplyDeleteOh, man! That sucks. I'm glad you'll be able to treat it now though. GD is only a big deal if you let it get out of control. I'm sure your doctors will keep you and the Halfling nice and safe!

ReplyDeleteJust remember, there have been lots of women who have had GD who have gone on to have perfectly healthy babies. It's not the end of the world, although I know it feels that way right now.

Sorry about getting diagnosed with gestational diabetes. That stinks. I know there will be some great women on here that will be able to help.
ReplyDeleteHi hon!! You are going to be fine. You won't be starting any kind of insulin straight away so don't worry about injections just yet. They will wait and see what your levels are. Basically everyone tolerates carbs differently so the first few weeks will be a bit hit and miss. You will need to buy an at home blood glucose testing kit and a bunch of strips. Hopefully covered by insurance? Anyway then you test (well I did) fasting, which is as soon as you wake up-not when you get to work or after a shower. Because then it will be an incorrect result. Then 2 hours after finishing each meal.
ReplyDeleteThe best way to control your BGL's is 30 min excercise every day, but check with your doc if this is alright. And protein with every meal, and small portions.

ReplyDeleteIck! You'll just have to count carbs, and be sure to balance them out with each meal and snack with protein. The nutritionist should be very hopefully. Hopefully you can control it with diet.
ReplyDeleteit's really not that hard to count carbs - honest! 2 pg's with gd and i'm thrilled that i started doing it because this +size woman is coming down in size!! it's just careful planning and filling yourself up with the good stuff that your little halfling needs to grow healthy and strong! you love to cook and eat a wide variety of foods so it should be no prob!!! honest! i had a very restrictive diet and the pp that stated 50 carbs per meal were too many for me - i ate 30 for breakfast, 15 am snack, 30 for lunch, 15 snack, 45 for dinner and a 15 then a 30g snack in the evening - i ate more food than ever before just spread it out through the day! I still enjoyed chocolate, ice cream, chips, french fries etc just in moderation and spread out through the day. You can do it with careful planning and attention....and isn't this long wait to even be this far into your pg well worth the sacrifice of counting a few measly carbs??? e me if you want some tips ok!?!
