Hobbit-ish Potpurri: Do-do, Do-do, Do-do-do...

Hey Humble Readers...

How's it going?  It's a bit of a grey day in the Shire, but at least the snow is still melting.  As of tomorrow we are supposed to be getting pretty cold again for a few days.  Ugh.

AF is here, and yet again she's kicking my ass.  I seriously want to line up all the women who told me that my period would get 'soooo much easier' after having kids, and kick them all really really hard.  If anything, it's gone back to the way it was when I was in my teens and early twenties, with nausea, extraordinary cramps, and migraines.  And to add insult to injury, I can't take the meds I used to (rx muscle relaxers) because they make me groggy.  I just don't feel I can do that when it's just me and the wee-lings.

So, did the title of today's post give you a hint?  Maybe not, but it's that time of year again.  Jeopardy online test time!  And this year, I'm taking the test too.  We'll see if either my Beloved or I get called for an audition.  It would be a great excuse to have a mini vacation if we did.  We both chose Phoenix as our audition city, and if it's like when my Beloved auditioned (in February of 2011) it would be a nice break from the winter.  I'm taking my test tonight, and my Beloved is doing his tomorrow night.

A while back I mentioned that I've been losing some weight, and that is still going down, which I LOVE, but there are other things happening that have been a bit on the humorous side.  For the last several years I've only owned a couple of pairs of jeans at a time because my wardrobe primarily consisted of clothes that I needed for work (strict dress code) and I rarely got to wear jeans.  After that came maternity clothes, which I retired last summer.  With the weight loss recently, along with pounds I've also been losing inches.  The dress pants that I used to wear to work are extremely loose and baggy on me, and the jeans that I bought after Ginny was born actually FELL OFF!!  I was walking down the hall to the nursery, carrying Pip, and they fell right to my ankles.  It happened again, later in the day, right in front of our living room window when I bent to put Pip on the floor.  I recently went shopping and bought a couple of pairs of jeans, in a size that I haven't worn in more than fifteen years.  I still have a ridiculous long way to go to get healthy, but I'm thrilled with the progress so far.

I don't normally promote products on my blog, but I have to tell you all about my new shampoo.  Back when I was expecting Ginny, my hair was beautiful.  One of the few things that was really great about being pregnant... nice hair.  After she was born, it went funky(brittle, limp, and dry).  And it stayed funky.  And it got worse while I was expecting Pip.  When Pip was about four months old, it started falling out a lot.  I would have to clean out my hair brush multiple times while brushing.  My hair has always been fine textured and easily tangled, and with the brittleness, that meant it was breaking constantly.  I was so frustrated.  I couldn't even put it in a ponytail, because the ouchless elastics would pull my hair out or break it.  SOoooo I switch to a new L'Or.eal hair care system (the one in their black and pink bottles) and after a month, I have my hair back.  It's soft, it's easy to brush out, and it feels so much stronger.  My only frustration now is all the funny wispy bits where my hair is growing back in (like along my hairline, at my temples, etc)

Brain hiccup of the day:  I didn't realize until 3pm that the recipe I was going to make was actually a slow-cooker recipe.  It's a new one for me that I chose off my pinterest board and I didn't read it all the way through.  Doh!

So tell me, would you consider trying out for Jeopardy?

  1. Actually, I have never thought about it for myself, but I think that McRuger totally should! He knows everything!

I'm so sorry that AF is kicking your butt. This month was a hard one for me too (and hit while on our one-night, romantic getaway).

It's been cold here too (although probably not as cold as where you are). We're expecting more cold weather and a bit of rain.

I hope your day is better tomorrow. And, just FYI, if you ever venture to the western US, we should totally meet.

  2. I actually took the test last night! I'd have to say that I probably will NOT be getting a call back though...damn political and geographical questions! I did well on the pop culture/art stuff though. It was fun to at least try though...heaven forbid I did get a call-I'd be a hot mess on TV! Good luck with both of your tests tonight!

My hair was SO luxurious while I was pregnant. It didn't grow fast or anything but it got even thicker than it is now. After I had Ruby I was shedding like CRAZY! I've started using the L'oreal sulfate-free line, I like it a lot.

  3. Can you take Ibuprofen for your cramps? It should not make you groggy - it's an NSAID - nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug - like Tylenol and asprin and works great for cramps. My periods have been bad since I went off the pill in my mid 30s (no babies, we adopted from China instead and DH got a vasectomy). Finally this year I got so anemic I will be getting a hysterectomy next week. I can't wait to be done with the whole mess!
    Congrats on the weight loss!
I suck at Jeopardy - street smarts but not book smart.

  4. I have seriously thought about trying out for Jeopardy. Vic and I have long said if they ever had a team competition that we could kick *ss playing together because our fields of knowledge compliment each other.

  5. Years ago, I would've tried for Jeopardy in a second. I was in academic decathalon team, and knowledge master open, and all kinds of super nerdy stuff that I loved. :) But then my thyroid happened, and now "I has the dumb." My brain just feels foggy all the time, and it's quite difficul to recall specifics. Sometimes it makes me sad to know how much of me I've lost to this crap... but on the bright side, it makes reading books more fun because I remember much less of them than I used to. :)
A big woohoo!!!! for the weight loss! That has to be great! Except for mooning the whole neighborhood. LOL. And I'm on AF right now too, and it's killer. I'm with you, having kids made my period SO much worse. So much worse. Ugh. Nothing over the counter can touch the pain, or the nausea...

  6. Fantastic job on the weight loss! No! I would never consider trying to get on Jeopardy. Nope. Uh uh. I have alopecia so I get the annoying wispies...but I'm grateful I still get them because wispy for me usually means they are about to die out permanently. It's ok, God provided me with a nice head shape. : ) Good luck getting the audition!

  9. Well done on the weight loss, Missus, and sorry that AF is kicking your ass. Hopefully, they'll be able to get me on something that will fix that (or at least make it so she's not so angry). Good luck on Jeopardy, smart lady!

  10. I'm new to your blog so don't know how you feel about non-disposable methods of sanitary protection but lots of people (me included) have reported having far less pain and cramps during their period once they ditched the disposables. I used washable pads for a few years, trying a mooncup every once in a while and last year I made a concerted effort to get the hang of it and now I use the mooncup most of the time. I went from needing prescription painkillers (and once even an injection directly into my stomach area, the pain was so bad) as well as being on the pill to not having to be on the pill and only sometimes needing a normal painkiller maybe once during the whole time. It may not help every situation but enough people seem to think it makes a difference to make it worth checking out. This is a thread from a green living forum where I first became properly aware of it (a year or so after someone sent me a link to the divacup website, which I genuinely thought was a joke at first): http://ww.w.thegreenlivingforum.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=74

Well done on the weightloss. I'm in the same boat and it is a lovely feeling when clothes just get too big to be worn anymore.
