August ICLW: Did You Know?

Hey Humble Readers!

For those of you who are new here or are visiting from ICLW, WELCOME!  For all my regular readers... thanks so much for stopping by today.  I hope you're all having a great Sunday.  I'm super stoked because my parents are going to be here for a quick visit (something that rarely ever happens, even tho my sister lives only 2 hours away... no, I'm not bitter).

So, I bet you didn't know that your friendly neighbourhood hobbit is a trivia junkie.  Did you know that?  Huh?  Did ya?  :)  I love reading about stuff that I'm reading about.  For example, while I was reading Memoirs of a Geisha a couple of weeks ago, I looked up the term geisha on wikipedia and learned all kinds of things that I didn't know before.  I do the same while I watch tv and movies.  (I know, I'm a terminal geek)

For my intro this month, I thought I would share some of the completely random sh!t that lives in my brain

Did you know...
  • the original geishas were men?
  • the human body gives off as much heat as a 100 watt light bulb?
  • WD-40 dissolves cocaine? (no, I do not know this by personal experience)
  • the words vanilla and vagina have the same word origins?
  • ketchup was not always made from tomatoes?  Other variants include anchovy, lobster, lemon, and cucumber.
  • in the movie "Scarface" the f-bomb is dropped 207 times?  That averages out to once every 1.22 minutes.
  • guinnea pigs were originally domesticated as a food source?
  • natural red-heads make up only 2% of the world's population?
  • there is a law in California that makes it illegal to lick toads?
  • Canadians eat an average of 23.5 pounds of cheese a year.
What random sh!t do you have in your brain?

If you have the time, take a peak at my most recent Foodie Friday post.  It was a bit late (ok, a lot) going up, but I'd like to know what you think.

  2. LOL! Just love the random quotes! Thanks so much for leaving a comment on my blog. For the record, based on the cheese stat, I think I should be Canadian.

  4. No wonder I didn't like Scarface lol

I do the same thing, research what I'm reading about. I think I may just head to CA to go lick a toad...think I'll get arrested?

    Happy ICLW

  6. I Wikipedia everything, too!

I think a love for reading and a love of trivia go hand in hand.

By the by, did you ever post about DH's Jeopardy experience? Did I miss it?

  7. I love trivia. I do that mostly with movies and tv. I think Blu-ray was created especially for Special Features junkies like me. I think 'The Big Lebowski' has 'Scarface' beat by the number of times the f-bomb is dropped (292)!

Thanks for stopping by my blog :)

  8. I google stuff that I read or see in movies all the time... you're in good company :)

However the beset random stuff I know tends to come from commentaries or behind-the-scenes type stuff. For example:
-Without A Paddle was set in Oregon USA but was shot in New Zealand.
-The producer of W.A.P has never seen the LOTR movies so was constantly pretending to know what people were talking about when they said "such and such scene was filmed right here!"
-Most fans of the Sookie Stackhous Novels were disappointed in last weeks' True Blood episode that was supposed to showcase an important romantic "shower scene" that got turned into a hallucinogenic dream.
-As far as all the Sci-Fi Fans go, "Firefly" should have had multiple seasons, the reason it had low ratings was because of a lack of advertising for the show so no one knew it was on until the first season was over, and canceled.
-New Zealand the and Pacific Northwest have similar climates, so much so that a friend of mine is growing a kiwi plant successfully.
-The reason Corgi's were bred to have stumpy legs was so that when herding farm animals, if the animal kicked out, they would kick over the top of the dog and not actually hit the dog.
-The word "Conciliar" means Of, relating to, or proceeding from a council, especially an ecclesiastical one (Thank you most recent theology read for having my look up that word)

Sorry I've been so absent lately, I feel like I have missed a ton of posts! I've been so consumed in my own life, I lost track of a lot. It'll take me some time to catch up on the posts, but glad it looks like things are going well. Here's hoping your TTC goes smoothly (or smoothER then last time!)

Hobbits are social creatures, and love hearing from friends old and new. Pull up a comfy chair and let's get to know one another.
