Hey Humble Readers...
Thank you so much for your words of encouragement on my last post. I managed to get out for my walk yesterday (bigger bandage on my blisters) and actually got 6km in, plus I did my squats and abs & arms workout. And by bedtime last night I could hardly walk. LOL. My... well, my glutes were aching. Still are today, so I skipped my walk this morning and did a bunch of housework and grocery shopping instead. Didn't get all my steps in, but I'm okay with that. I also found a tip for stretching my new shoes, which I did today. Tomorrow will be the test.

I meant to post this yesterday, but the day got away from me. The winner in my giveaway associated with my interview with J.R. Vikse is Good Timing! (Had my Beloved do the 'pick a number' thing.) I'll be in touch soon GT, to arrange for you to get your copy of The Lazy Postman. The second part of my interview with J.R. will be posted during September's ICLW.

So, other than a to do list a mile long for tomorrow morning (including packing), I'm feeling very ready for this trip. I know it's just a couple of hours down the highway and only for the weekend, but I'm almost as excited as I was when we went to NYC. Almost. We agreed that we are only going to eat at restaurants that we don't have at home... little local places mostly. Actually, most of the ones we've chosen have been featured on You Gotta Eat Here (the Canadian version of Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives). And we have a few fun adventures planned that I'm looking forward to telling you all about next week. My MIL will get here in the early afternoon tomorrow and then we are off! Hooray!

Pinterest find of the week: Ok, actually I found this one a while ago, but I only implemented it about a month ago. Instead of using shaving foam or soap when you shave your legs, use baby oil. This is genius! My legs feel so soft! I add a step, using a sugar scrub on my legs first, then the baby oil. I find that I don't have to shave as often, and the baby oil is also supposed to make your blade last longer.

Tomorrow, Friday, is my Beloved's birthday. I am so very blessed to have him in my life. He's a wonderful husband, an amazing father, and my best friend. This trip is partly to celebrate his birthday, and I also have a big dinner planned for next week, the menu for which is a surprise for him so I'll have to tell you all about it later, just in case he pops on here.
*****
Well, I'm off to bed. I want to get a walk in tomorrow morning, and it's going to be a busy day. Have a great long weekend everyone!
While I might not be a hobbit genetically, I do believe that I am one culturally. A homebody at heart, with a fear of (but slight craving for) adventure, who values simple things like good food, good books, and good friends. Chronicling the journey of the unlikely pairing of a Hobbit and an Ent, who have travelled down the road through infertility & RPL, toward building our family. We've come a long way, and now with two precious wee-lings in tow, our road goes ever on and on...

Hobbit-ish Potpurri: A Grouchy Hobbit Lives Here
Good Evening Humble Readers...
It's been a trying evening, but now I am home, in my pyjamas, cuddled up on the couch with my Beloved, my puter, and America's Got Talent. (Does anyone else thing that it's hugely ironic that none of the AGT judges are American by birth?)
*****
It has been raining cats and dogs here for the last two days. Yesterday we had tornado warnings to the south of us, today we had wind gusts up to 90km. We've gotten 130mm of rain in 36 hours. It's cold too. We went from upper 20s and low 30s (that's celcius folks... and damn hot!) down to 7 this morning. Brrrr!
*****
I have 8 very itchy mosquito bites! I am trying very hard not to scratch.
*****
Today was busy from the get go... I had a chiro appointment, then a Dr B appointment (another good bp day). Then home for an hour or so, then off to work. And because it's raining buckets it was pretty busy. And the second half of my shift was full of big and small irritations that made me very Very grouchy.
*****
And because I was cranky, all I really wanted when I got home was a slice of the chocolate cake that I made last week... if you haven't checked out the recipe yet, you MUST... only to remember that we polished it off a couple of days ago. Bummer! I'm going to have to make it again for my Beloved's birthday next month.
*****
I am facing a quandry, Humble Readers. In the next month, three of my favourite authors are releasing new titles (one is already out, actually). Part of me wants to stock up before we go on vacation, so that I have stuff to read, but most of me knows that I'm going to be staying up late most nights talking to my mom and not doing a whole lot of reading while we are out there.
*****
And speaking of vacation... I am so excited to be going 'home' for a week! I haven't been home for two and a half years (far too long considering it's only a 9 hour drive) and I miss my mountains soooo much! Not to mention my family! And on the list of must do's for while we are in K-town... a trip to Wr.ap Zo.ne for a Leaning Tower of Pesto! Yummy!
*****
If you've made it this far through this tedious whiny post... you deserve a gold medal! Hobbit points all around!

Cooking As Therapy... or the Lament of the Dusty House
Ok... So while I'm not as strong as I thought I was, I think things are slowly moving in the right direction.
Of course there are always speedbumps on the road to healing... and we have had our fair share. A week and a half ago, my sister's father-in-law passed away. While I didn't know the man well, I know that my brother-in-law would be devastated and wanted to do as much as I could for them, even from a distance. This amounted to a lot of listening as my sister ranted about her husband's screwy family and the craziness that ensued their patriarch's passing. I will save you the drama, but suffice it to say their family has Jerry Springer on speed-dial.
Then, just a few days ago, my Darling One's great aunt passed away. This was not unexpected. She was 91 and had been in slowly declining health for the last few years. But nonetheless, she was a rock in the family and her death has hit us all. Auntie K was the closest thing my Beloved has had to a grandmother, and she was a second mother to my mother-in-law (she was actually the mid-wife at my MIL's birth). Today there was a beautiful service to commemorate her life.
Now, any of you who know my mom know that when she is upset she cleans. So does my sister. I imagine my sister's house is spotless right now with all the stress she's been under. To my chagrin, I don't clean when I'm stressed... instead I cook.
I have been blessed to have the last week off work. I had great grandiose plans for what I was going to do with my week off. I was going to clean out the storage room (I swear it's getting done tomorrow morning!), reorganize the linen closet, and tackle the spare bedroom that has never really been dealt with since we moved in. I was going to do some reading (have only made it halfway through a reread of Memoirs of a Geisha) and writing (story ideas don't come until the end of my vacation time... I should know that by now). And in general I was just going to get my life back to normal.
What did I do instead? Watched waaaaaaaay too much daytime tv, spent too much time with Mario and his crazy brother Luigi trying to defeat Bowser and rescue Princess Peach, and listening to the same CD over and over while playing Mahjongg.
BUT... I did have a productive day in the middle of the week. Instead of dusting and vaccuuming like I had planned, I suddenly felt inspired to cook. I mean really cook. I love cooking for my loved ones. I love trying new recipes. I love experimenting (as this evening's dinner can prove, my experiments don't always work) and I love feeding people.
So, in one day I am proud to say that I made:
I found something in the process of chopping veggies and separating eggs. I found a moment of contentment. I had some peace, in the midst of the chaos I created in the kitchen. I felt like me again. I may never be a mom, but damn it I can cook and I can be proud of that.
And that humble readers is the point of this rambling story. Come for dinner any time. I'll hook you up with some pretty good food, if I do say so myself.
(Oh, and Mom, if you are reading this... I did the dusting and vaccuuming after I cleaned up the kitchen)

So, in one day I am proud to say that I made:
- 1 dozen Crusty French Rolls
- a pot of Beef Stew
- a ginormous pot of Italian Sausage & Tortellini Soup (zucchini, carrots, onions, garlic, tomatoes, etc)
- a medium pot of Beef Barley Soup
- a loaf of Brioche (which turned out amazing for a first try)
