Howdy Humble Readers...
I hope that you're having a great day so far. We had a fun morning of playing and goofing around, and now, I'm happily watching an old episode of Gilmore Girls and listening to my wee little mister snore his heart out.
*****
From the stuff I wasn't warned about file: I'm in an odd place in terms of my post-pregnancy body. All my joints ache, particularly my hands, hips, knees, and ankles. This happened after Ginny, too, and I found it seems to be fairly common, but why does no one talk about it? It makes sense that we're warned that our tendons and ligaments stretch out and get all loosey-goosey during pregnancy, but why does no one talk about when those tendons and ligaments start going back to normal... the pain is making it difficult to sleep
And from the same file: Nerves and muscles in my abdomen must be on a new level of healing because there have been random twitches and small spasms that almost make it feel like there's a halfling still in there kicking. Bizarre!
*****
Exciting news for our hobbit-hole! A couple of weeks ago the condo board agreed that we need to replace the patio doors on four of the six units in our building, including ours! Yay! The window guy was here measuring last week, and hopefully we'll have new sliding glass doors before the snow flies! Ones with a screen door that actually slides open. I'm not picky tho... ;)
*****
I had a nightmare last night that I was being stalked by this crazy woman. She took over my blog and was posting all kinds of insane stuff saying she was me, and advertising porn sites from my online hobbit-hole. Writing it out here, it doesn't sound scary, only nuts, but trust me I was freaked out. I woke up just after 5 this morning shaking and with my heart racing. It took about an hour and a half to shake the creepy feeling, even with reading and watching a bit of a documentary about farmers markets on PBS.
*****
For all the work I did on the weekend to get the nursery ready to move Pippin in there, I haven't been able to do so yet. I keep telling myself that I'm concerned that he'll start waking in the night again and disturb Ginny. But really, I know I'm just lame.
*****
Sold another of the real baby items we had... the tummy-time mat. Pip is still doing tummy time of course, but we're actually working more on sitting up. With the bum.bo chair and the bouncer-exerciser thing, and the playpen, and Ginny's reading chair all in the living room, I was just getting a bit claustrophobic. I had to get rid of something. And we have a gazillion receiving blankets to use for tummy time, and they fold up where the tummy-time mat didn't (at least not easily). So why do I feel like crap for having sold it already?
While I might not be a hobbit genetically, I do believe that I am one culturally. A homebody at heart, with a fear of (but slight craving for) adventure, who values simple things like good food, good books, and good friends. Chronicling the journey of the unlikely pairing of a Hobbit and an Ent, who have travelled down the road through infertility & RPL, toward building our family. We've come a long way, and now with two precious wee-lings in tow, our road goes ever on and on...

The Stroller Saga
Howdy Humble Readers...
I hope you all had a great weekend. Ours was productive and enjoyable, for the most part
Things didn't get off to a great start on Friday, as Ginny's teething kicked into high gear and she cut three teeth in one day. Believe me, she was a mess... But we are on our way to finally being done with the heavy lifting of teething. Two more canines and one more molar, and all the basics will be in, thank heaven!
Saturday dawned cloudy, but not cold, and after a breakfast of sausage mc.muf.fins (which I discovered I no longer enjoy) and iced coffee, we managed to get the four of us out the door and off to the farmer's market. The market itself wasn't all that spectacular, as it's still very early in the growing season here. I picked up a bag of potatoes from a local Hutterite colony, a very disappointing cherry pie from a local baker, and a handmade necktie for Pippin to wear for his photoshoot in a couple of weeks.
The big thing we learned by going to the farmer's market yesterday... our current stroller situation sucks! (I already knew this, but it was driven home hard.)
Having to haul two strollers in our car (a prius), even when one of them is a crappy umbrella stroller is inconvenient, and the aforementioned umbrella stroller is simply not good for day to day use. It's place is on nice smooth floors, like those in an airport or a mall. Not rough terrain like sidewalks, walking trails, or apparently parking lots like where the farmer's market was set up.
And beyond all that, how in the world am I supposed to get out of this house with two under two without a good double stroller?
I had, several months ago, strongly hinted to both sides of our family, that in lieu of clothing/blanket gifts for our new little one, we would greatly appreciate contributions to our stroller fund. I was hoping possibly get enough to pay for a good chunk of this beautiful little gem.
I love it because it converts from a single to double easily and it steers like a dream. It's got awesome variety in configurations. It also folds up fairly small... for a double anyway. The downside... it's bloody expensive. And when I say bloody expensive, I mean slasher-flick bloody.
Of course, our families are of the general opinion that I'm either wasteful or just deluded. My MIL called the week after I talked with her about this situation and offered to buy us a $15 thrift store double stroller. I have nothing against buying used things. I like it actually, because it saves us money on things that the kids will outgrow quicker than I can blink.
But a stroller? I have spent hours researching customer reviews, dimensions, safety recalls. I have tried out brand after brand, evaluating how they turn, how easy they are to fold, and if I could lift them by myself up and down our staircase (our condo is a second floor walk up... not a big deal unless you've got a baby, a toddler, and a stroller to wrangle).
I think that money spent on a stroller that will get used, and save me time and aggravation is money well spent. Just as I think spending $15 on a stroller that I will hate and ultimately never use is money wasted.
So, what's the point of all this venting of my spleen?
We have ordered our new stroller.
I'm hoping and praying that it will do the job. Everything I could find online was fairly positive. It was in the top ten of every list I could find, and was the most reasonably priced. It's still another large hit to our budget, but we needed something.
It should arrive later this week. I'll keep you all posted.

Hobbit-ish Potpurri: The Crud is Back
Hey Humble Readers...
I hope that you all are having a great early autumn. The weather here on the flatland has been remarkably good, including getting our hottest summer temp on the second day of fall... Crazy! It's been a busy few days, and I have much to catch you all up on.
*****
As the title of this post suggests, I am once again under the weather. This is the second cold I have had THIS MONTH!!! Ugh! Sinuses, ears, throat... just gross. And I think that Ginny might be catching it, she woke up snarfly this morning. I'm praying that we are both feeling okay tomorrow night, as we have been invited out to dinner with a couple of couples from church.
*****
I had an appointment at the diabetic clinic on Tuesday morning. It really was just a refresher on the dietary stuff and setting a game plan. I'm testing my blood sugar before and after each meal (2 hours), and I have to send in my log sheet tomorrow. The nurses will look at it and if my numbers are screwy (which they are), then they will call in a recommended rx to Dr B, and I'll be on insulin beginning next week. The challenge over the last few days has been trying to eat the way I should when I feel like total crap. The m/s pukies combined with this cold has left me craving a ton of carbs, and sadly I have been giving in.
*****
I had more blood drawn on Tuesday as well. Five vials from my finicky veins. Thankfully, one of the other doctors in Dr B's practice called me yesterday and let me know my beta numbers. (As an aside - In looking at my O chart, it appears that I may have o'd a day later than I thought, and if that's the case then my DPO are all different.) So, taking that into account...
13DPO - 34 20DPO - 442 27DPO - 3215
Not as high as I had hoped, but still doubling within normal parameters. I'm still below average, but I'm feeling a little more confident. (I've come across a website that I love... http://www.betabase.info/ It's a collection of beta numbers from viable pregnancies and shows the variants in numbers. Very reassuring) My symptoms have been slightly more intense so that's also helping me feel a little better. I've decided that I'm not going to go for another blood draw next week as I have my u/s on Wednesday.
*****
The other day I spent the afternoon/evening with a couple of my girlfriends. We went to the Big City two hours north of us and hit Ikea, Olive Garden, and an event for 'employees' of my former bookstore. We got to attend a presentation from one of the biggest publishers in the country about all the new books coming out this fall. So many great books... I can't wait! Ikea was so much fun... I was a good girl and limited myself to the few things I had in mind when we first walked in. It was hard not to be impulsive, but I stayed strong! It was a great day and had a lot of laughs.
*****
I've decided that I'm going to do one or two projects each day until Wednesday. Things like going through closets, making soup, and sorting through my crafting stuff. I'm hoping that it will help me not fixate on the u/s. I also have a big pseudo-Thanksgiving dinner to plan (more on that later).
*****
There are a ton of other things that I want to tell you about, but they will have to wait for now, as I'm fading. Ginny is napping and if I'm lucky I might be able to catch a solid half hour of sleep. Woo hoo!

Hobbit-ish Potpurri: This and That
Good Morning Humble Readers...
I hope you're all doing well. I'm a bit dopey this morning as it appears that insomnia has made a come back. I just can't seem to stay asleep. One good thing about insomnia... It gives me a great time to catch up on my blog reading and commenting.
*****
A huge thank you to everyone who offered to help me out with my shipping dilemma. You are all superstars! Things are now in process, and I'm hoping to have my crib bedding in a couple of weeks.
*****
So, the diaper bag... this is the one I decided on.
It's not quite as cute as I was hoping, but it still looks more like a purse than a diaper bag. I also love that it comes with attachments so that it clips to the stroller handle. I'm justifying the price because this is going to end up being my purse for the next couple of years or so (at least!) so I was willing to spend what I would spend on a quality purse.
*****
Do any of you remember this little lady?
It's time for the smushed fertility goddess to be on her way. When Lindsay of "Destined To Be An Old Woman With No Regrets" sent her to me last year, it was under the proviso that I pass her along to one of my bloggy sisters when the time was right. Watch for her to be showing up on a blog near you! I will tell you that this little piece of clay is going to be going on a long journey. I just really hope she makes it in one piece.
*****
I have been doing more cooking... Yesterday, I made a shepherd's pie that is now residing happily in my freezer, along side a big container of beef stew and another big container of italian sausage and black bean soup. I feel like I'm making a bit of progress on my list! Yay!
*****
Just when I think my blood sugars are coming into line, I have a morning like today. I don't know if something happened with my insulin (when I took the needle out, it leaked a bit) or what, but yesterday was a great day and today my numbers and ketones are awful. I had the same thing for breakfast today as I did yesterday. Ugh! Maybe the insomnia is a part of this equation?

What Are They Smoking?
Good Evening Humble Readers...
Ok, so I'm starting to get pretty excited about baby gear. I've been holding back, out of a certain level of fear. But, I'm starting to get past that.
Tonight I started looking for a diaper bag. I know I don't want a generic Wa.lm.ar.t set up. I want something cute, maybe a bit trendy. Something practical and fun at the same time.
I did some online snooping, and I found this...
Ok, so cute right? Maybe even beautiful... but can you guess how much it costs?
Go ahead and try... and remember, it's primary purpose is to haul diapers, of both the clean and dirty variety.
.
.
.
Got a number in your head?
.
.
.
Yeah, so it's $400! (I'll wait for you to get back up on your chair)
Maybe I'm cheap. Maybe I'm not fashion-forward.. But I think a diaper bag that is almost twice what I paid for the crib... that's just a little exessive. Back to looking...

Hobbit-ish Potpurri: Shop-a-holics Anonymous
Good Evening Humble Readers!
I hope you are all looking forward to a fun, restful weekend. I know I am! That's right, I've got the weekend off!!! (Of course I had to specifically request it, way back in December, but hey... I'm off!)
*****
The reason why I have the weekend off is because one of my Beloved's nephews is getting married tomorrow. He's the first of the (bio) grandkids to get married and it's a big big day. It's going to be a pretty low key wedding (evening ceremony followed by a dance, no reception). I haven't seen much of my Beloved's family in the last few months, so I'm really looking forward to connecting with them again.
*****
The wedding has led to a lot of shopping recently. Shower gift (casserole dishes, kitchen towels, and a cookbook), wedding gift (bath sheets, hand towels, wash cloths, potpurri), new shirt for Beloved, new new shoes for Beloved... and then all the extras that I found along the way (including some Christmas presents!).
*****
One of the extras that 'fell' into my shopping cart is the very first little outfit for the Halfling. It's a four piece little set, with a onesie, a diaper shirt, pants, and a jacket. White with little snails and butterflies all over it, green for the pants and jacket. And for a really good price too. But I can't tell you how hard it was to buy it. I almost put it back twice. So, now, hanging in our closet (not in the baby's room yet) is a sweet little outfit for this Halfling that is kicking the stuffing out of me right now.
*****
Work has been super stressful lately. Our GM is on vacation (which delays a lot of decision making), and we are in the midst of our end of summer staff exodus (it happens every year at this time, to some degree). This year the exodus is particularly hard hitting because we are having to fill some key positions. And going into the critical holiday season we need the best of the best in those spots. There are also a bunch of things that are just beyond our control (ie - the economy, the weather) that are making our jobs harder right now too.
*****
Galactic Badness Alert! My oven died two days ago! I had used it the a couple of days before, and thought that it was taking a little longer to heat up than normal, but I didn't think much of it at the time. I went to use it the other day, just to toast up a couple hamburger buns, and nothing happened... ARGH! I have made sure that the timer didn't get turned on by accident, I've checked the connections on the elements inside and they all seem to be okay. So... because I have exhausted my limited capabilities of fix-it-ness, we have called a repair man. He'll be here on Monday morning and I am praying that it won't cost too much to fix.
*****
We are under ANOTHER severe thunderstorm warning. Pretty much every three days now. I just hope that tomorrow is nice for the wedding.

My Internal Voice of Optimism
With both of our previous pregnancies, I disregarded what is considered sage advice, and made baby related purchases in the first trimester. If I were someone who believed in jinxes, then I would say that I wouldn't buy another blessed baby item until I have that long awaited little one in my arms needing as-yet-unpurchased diapers.
When pregnant the first time, with Emily, I purchased a couple Be.lla bands early on. Then my boss and his wife were getting rid of their car seat & stroller, and as it was only two years old I jumped at the chance to save some money. The week after we bought it from them, I miscarried.
When pregnant the second time, with Olivia, I was pretty determined to not purchase anything baby related until that mythical second trimester. Buuuut... I was doing some window shopping in a baby/toy store and there was a play pen (does anyone else find it funny they call them play yards now?) from a great name brand on sale for half price. Well I couldn't pass that up, right? Again, the week after I bought it, we found out I was going to miscarry.
There were also the sweet little stuffed elephants, that would go so perfectly in how I have envisioned the nursery. And don't even ask me about books... it's an occupational hazard. I bought all kinds of books. I'm really looking forward to someday being able to read them all past the 8 or 10 week mark.
After our second loss (right after the last u/s that showed no hope), I was adamant I was going to sell all the baby stuff we had accumulated. I felt that I couldn't bring myself to really look at it any more. I wanted to throw away all the free samples I had received and I wanted to tear the mocking little faces off those stuffed elephants. My beloved, ever patient and a voice of reason, asked me to wait. We got home from that ultrasound, and he went and closed the door to the spare room where all of these items were stored. And that was the end of that... for about a month.
Together, we decided that the time had come to sort through the spare room. It was tough, but he took charge of all the baby stuff, tucking it away in the closet, while I took care of the boxes that had never been unpacked from when we moved in. Now, every time one of those freebies that I signed up for arrives in the mail, he just takes them and tucks them inside the car seat. Have I mentioned how blessed I am to have him?
So... a couple of weeks ago we got a whole new line of baby gift product at our store. As I was helping sort through it, I came across something I had been looking for in both of my previous pregnancies. They are frames... white frames designed specifically for u/s pictures... with the phrase "Love At First Sight" on them.
Without even thinking, I grabbed three and stashed them on my desk with my stack of books to buy. A couple days later, I almost put them back out on the sales floor. This was before my HSG, when I was still in that waiting period when I 'knew' they were going to find a septum or something else equally devastating to my dream of being a mother. Finally, I just grabbed them and made the purchase. When I came home from work, I handed the bag to my beloved, and he stashed them in the 'usual place'.
Call it hope, call it my internal voice of optimism, call it delusional behavior... I am feeling ok about it all. I'm feeling hope, for what feels like the first time in months. I know that this tww (two week wait for the un-initiated) will likely end in a BFN, but for now I am hopeful.
And I'm enjoying being in this hopeful place.
